"The Power of Design" is the title of Karl Stocker's new book on the different efforts in eleven Cities around the globe towards a comprehensive meaning of design. All cities have in common that design plays a vital role in urban life and development. Although sometimes design in a traditional sense can not be easily found, the fact that a preoccupation with it towards a more self-evident use in politics, economy and culture is shown through the citie's commitement in UNESCO's Creative Cities network.

This year's projects: Tijuana Creative City

The City of Tijuana, Baja California has been undergoing a substantial positive urban development change over a period of several years. Driven by citizens dedicated to sustainable urban issues, social consciousness and participatory citizenship the development of the City is seeing a major economic, ecological and cultural boost.

Graz in Japan

Karl Stocker, head of the departement of Informationdesign at the University of Applied Sciences, FH Joanneum writes about our mutual visit in the Japanes Cities of Kobe and Nagoya, both members in the UNESCO Creative City Network as Cities of Design.

During our visit we felt fantasticly welcomend, spent hours on so many interesting talks and we are now looking forward to all mutual projetcs, that we discussed.

CITY OF (OPEN) DESIGN - A PRO

Sure, being a Grazer by birth or by learning, you somehow get used to being disappointed time and again. All the same, I am optimistic about the City of Design. Why?

City of Design is not a lot of the things you might expect. It is not a festival, it has no end, no gigantic budget, no City of Design boss, and, in truth, it isn't even a title.

City of Design is an invitation by UNESCO and an ensuing commitment. It is an obligation to reflect on one's own city and to develop projects suited to improving the lives of people living in the city with lasting effect. One of the basic conditions is to share this experience with other cities and perhaps even to develop other, joint projects.
