Call for Participation: Frame magazine's The Great Indoors

As of 1 June 2013 registration is open for participation in the international, biennial design competition The Great Indoors. The Award honours interior design projects in the following four categories: ‘Show & Sell (Retail: shops, showrooms, stands, exhibitions), ‘Relax & Consume’ (Leisure: hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, spas, wellness centres), ‘Concentrate & Collaborate’ (Work: offices, studios, administration buildings, conference centres), ‘Serve & Facilitate’ (Public: libraries, hospitals, theatres, schools).

MUSICTHEMED UPSCALE HOTEL IN JURMALA, LATVIA - Call for Entries

This is an open international design ideas competition to find the best design solution for a music-themed upscale hotel in Jurmala, Latvia. The resort city, located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, is well known for its musical heritage, and the hotel shall express elements related to music in its design concept.

zerofootprint re-skinning award - Call for Entries

The Vision

The Zerofootprint Re-Skinning Awards is a not-for-profit initiative of Zerofootprint Software. The awards showcase newly evolving retrofitting and re-skinning design technologies, and present new ways of thinking about environmental sustainability and architectural design. The purpose of the competition is to jump-start the discussion around how we might retrofit entire cities in order to massively reduce our collective environmental footprint.

 

Who Should Enter

Architects, designers, engineers, building owners, or other professionals (individuals or groups) are eligible to submit building projects.  Buildings must be at least 50% complete with clear evidence of the new cladding system.  The jury will determine final eligibility of incomplete projects.

In March 2010, the first Re-Skinning Award winnerswere announced at the World Urban Forum in Rio de Janeiro, before a global audience.

This year we have teamed up with the leading school of its kind in Canada, the John H. Daniels School of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto to build on the success of the inaugural year.

 The deadline to submit an entry to the 2011 Re-Skinning Awards is August 31, 2011.

BioDesign Summer Lab NYC Applications Due May 31! 

ONE LAB 2011 Summer Lab for students, architects, scientists, artists, and individuals of all backgrounds to explore design with various living matter including live tissues, bacteria, tree grafting, fungi growth control and parametric scripting. The top three applicants, selected by the admission committee, will receive full scholarships. Limited grants and work-study opportunities are also available. ONE Lab is designed for students who wish to engage with the crossover of design and science. The lab concentrates on recent advances in the biotechnology and computation, both in theory and practice.

ONE Lab offers a new means of design inquiry where students will actively use the tools and technologies of live sciences . The participants will learn the processes of biotechnology (including technologies such as genetic engineering, tissue culture, and cloning), growing materials, grafting trees and plants, scripting and computational modeling for controlled growth. Students will have access to bio laboratories, techniques and expertise.

This summer approximately 40 researchers will gather in New York City for 3 weeks of intense creative and scientific exploration. TerreLab provides a unique opportunity for students to learn from internationally recognized scientists: Dr. Oliver Medvedik; Dr. Ellen Jorgenson; Dr. Dickson D. Despommier and renown designers and artists: Vito Acconnci, Natalie Jeremijenko, Marc Forens and many more. The Lab consists of a Seminar Week (guest lectures from international scholars and designers) and Workshop Weeks where the participant will chose a series of day-long workshops. All classes are beginner level and no previous knowledge or experience is required.

Design, if it is to be ecologically responsible and socially responsive, must be revolutionary and radical in the truest sense. It must dedicate itself to...maximum diversity with minimum inventory...or doing the most with the least. These prescient words were written 40 years ago by Viennese-born designer and  thinker Victor J. Papanek and published in his influential book Design for the Real World. While many have been inspired by Papanek's plea for responsible and humane design, many more have ignored it. Yet as we face unparalleled social, economic, and environmental challenges, Papanek's words are more timely and urgent than ever.
