The City of Tijuana, Baja California has been undergoing a substantial positive urban development change over a period of several years. Driven by citizens dedicated to sustainable urban issues, social consciousness and participatory citizenship the development of the City is seeing a major economic, ecological and cultural boost.
Events such as the recent Tijunana Innovadora Conference are clear evidence of the strong innovative interest and power here, bringing a very broad perspective on the issues mentioned above.
Through these initiatives the Region and City presents itself as a dynamic, evolving social territory with an enormous, but still partly untapped potential.
Migration plays a very specific role in the City’s history and social structure. Once considered a bridgehead for migration to the United States, it provides a home base today for many migrants from all parts of Mexico, who come here to seek and find work and a home within the city limits.
Remarkable projects like the one by the wonderful collective of Torolab, implementing an urban farm in the problematic area of Camino Verde, once the source of most 911 calls in the city and today the Granja Fronteriza – The Transborder Farm Project development.
Martin Krammer was invited by the organizations of the Tijuana Innovadora Festival to talk about “On Cities’ Creativity and Cultural Development“.
And what’s coming next?
Tijuana is planning to join the UNESCO Creative City Network as a City of Gastronomy by 2015. We will support the activists during this process.
